Frosty Morn’

The furnace was off  when we opened the library on Tuesday.                         We soldiered on until the heat came up, just before noon.  Hope no one missed out on a library visit while we were warming up an the town office.

Hogmanay* Day

The Nichols Library is closed on Monday, Janurary 2nd for the New Year’s Holiday.

(*Hogmanay  is the Scottish word for the last day of the year and is the start of a celebration which lasts in some cases through 2 January (Scottish Bank Holiday). Hogmanay traditions include bonfires, first-footing, and black buns.

New movies, just in time for the Holidays: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (part 2), The Help, Water for Elephants, Sarah’s Key and Crazy Stupid Love.   Also these  classics:  El Norte, Harlan Country USA, and Julie Traynor’s Tempest (with Helen Mirren).  UPDATE (12/28):  Cowboys and Aliens and The Debt.

Man-Booker Winners

This year’s winner of the Man Booker prize for fiction was A Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes. The   prize is given each year for best original full-length novel  written by a citizen of the British Commonwealth.   Check out this year’s prize winner and our display of recent honorees at the Nichols Library in Center Harbor (many of these titles can be downloaded or audio formats from the State Library’s Overdrive site).   Read more

The Library closed on Wednesday, November 23 due to wintery driving conditions.

The Nichols Library will be closed on Friday, November 11th in observation of Veterans Day.

Van Service Reaps Benefits!

At the Nichols Library, not having a book on hand is not the end of the world.  More often than not, the library can satisfy reader’s special interests through our interlibrary loan service.  As a member of the library staff notes, “our patrons have all kinds of interests that we could never hope to keep with.  For them, interlibrary loan is a godsend.”  Read more
